The heartless sicko who tossed a poor pup down the garbage chute of a Lower Manhattan high-rise last month is still running free — and Big Apple dog lovers are barking for justice.
The NYPD said this week that cops are still investigating but hadn’t made any arrests in the disturbing Aug. 23 incident in which a shih tzu was thrown down a 17-story trash chute inside the Gov. Alfred E Smith Houses, a NYCHA complex near the Brooklyn Bridge.
The pooch, who broke all four legs from the fall, was yelping and clinging to life when a building employee discovered it in the compactor around 10:30 a.m. It was handed off to the ASPCA for treatment, but could not be saved.
This week an online petition slamming the NYPD and NYCHA for their “inexcusable negligence” and “lack of seriousness in prioritizing” the case had amassed nearly 700 signatures.
“Such cruelty inflicted upon this innocent life is a crime and it shakes many New Yorkers to their core,” reads the Change.org petition, which calls for the agencies to “find and prosecute” the pooch killer.
“We implore the NYPD and NYCHA to intensify their efforts to investigate this case and catch the offender. Animals, like humans, have the right to live without fear and deserve justice when they are harmed,” it says.
Under New York’s animal cruelty laws, intentionally killing or seriously injuring a companion animal is considered a felony, and can carry up to a two-year long prison sentence.
